This post shares easy to visit historic places in Georgia, including Jimmy Carter’s Boyhood Farm, Andersonville National Historic Site, and Ocmulgee Mounds.

Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm

Nearest City:

• Plains, Georgia

Time Spent: 

• 1 to 2 hours, depending on how many buildings and audio stops you explore.

What You’ll See:

• Carter’s childhood home, barns, a commissary, farm structures, walking paths, audio stations with stories told by Jimmy Carter himself.

Tips:

• Plan to visit a neighboring town/city since there is not a lot of food options.
• Gift shop only accepts cards/apple pay.

Andersonville National Historic Site 

Nearest City:

• Andersonville, Georgia

Admission Price:

• Free (includes the National Prisoner of War Museum and the National Cemetery.)

Time Spent:

• 2 hours (Museum and Cemetery)

What You’ll See:

• The preserved Civil War prison site (Camp Sumter), the large National Cemetery, exhibits on POWs from all U.S. wars, and a self guided driving tour.

Tips:

• Prepare to be heartbroken by information you will learn at the POW museum.
• Park ranger will provide QR code for self guided tour audio.
• Go to the POW museum first.

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park 

Nearest City:

• Macon, Georgia

Admission Price:

• Free

Time Spent:

• 1 Hour (I did not do any of the hikes)

What You’ll See:

• Large earthen mounds, the Great Temple Mound, the Earth lodge with its original 1,000-year-old floor, a Visitor Center museum, forest and wetland trails.

Tips:

• Start at the Visitor Center to understand the Indigenous history before exploring the mounds.
• Plenty of Hiking trails.
• If you want cool tunnel pictures (Like This) with your vehicle, go 1 hour before closing time.
